We are alone.
I’m not sure who I’ve been hiding that from,
who I’ve been trying to protect from that truth.
It weighs on me.
Even in a fun house
I find myself sifting through every reflection I can,
hoping if I get through them all
one will shatter,
and she’ll be there
as if I finally found my way out.
That’s why I settle into the story:
the hopeful boy with pretty words,
whose home is the sidewalk.
The further I seep into this body
from the lantern I carry,
the more real those eyes will be
on the day I meet them.
This wish is how I know what I am.
