Licking Our Own Tail
What is it you recall about life
that I have yet to learn?
Why is it you lurk behind me
on all these walks?
Even my shadow takes a break
when the evening turns.
But still you stand there
with those glazing eyes,
piercing through me
as if you knew me
before I did.
Tell me, my friend.
What is it
that hides inside?
What is it
that hides inside?
I walk as if with purpose,
but always curl back
to where I started.
Same for these lines
that lift off
the platform of my tongue.
All start in silence
and end there too.
So what’s the use?
A pretty journey
back inwards.
A colorful life
waiting for closure.
So we go
around and around,
and around.
Different versions of one fate,
born again in time.
Born
again
in time.
We reason with doubt.
We fight our fear,
at war with mortal enemies
when it’s us
who’ve always been here.
We, ourselves,
walk home.
And there
we are,
waiting
with a big smile,
licking
our own tail.
