“Mandelbrot Man”

When I was a kid, I would watch a YouTube video of how the Mandelbrot Set expresses itself geometrically. It was the dawn of my appreciation for the infinite.

In this image, from left to right, you see a horizontal division that is taking place. Then, as you glance rightward, it becomes clear that the split emphasizes the emergence of a second, vertical dimension.

With an even deeper look into the surroundings on each circle, one might also recognize how the set begins to fractal out every which way, infinitely beyond just 2 directions.

This process reminds me of cell reproduction. It’s actually the exact same.

In mitosis, cells replicate themselves symmetrically, and in meiosis, they undergo a deeper division that makes way for infinite variation.

All creation undergoes this pattern, but in animals like you & me, meiosis variation occurs due to the creative marketing behind “sex cells”.

This is a scientific way of understanding the correspondence between geometry, nature, and the human experience.

Since we’ve fractaled away from the zero point of origin, it is easy to get caught up in left or right, or in moments of up or down. We loose sight of the fact that we’re all connected, we’re all made of the same “stuff”, and come from the same place.

For me, the truth in that is sometimes still not enough to recenter.

When I get stuck in that moment, I just look back to nature.

At its best, it’s able to remind me of this truth:

All my problems come from nothing, but from that nothing, lies the potential to propel myself, absolutely, in any direction.

An artifact from my early teen years.
